The St. Lawrence Land Trust was formed in 2002 by three residents of St. Lawrence County, New York (Edward Goldstein, Robert Washo, Richard Grover), initially in response to a landowner who was seeking a way to perpetually preserve the forest on his property along the Little River. The organization received not-for-profit 501(c)(3) status in 2004, and officially adopted the Land Trust Alliance’s Standards & Practices in 2005. The Land Trust Alliance is a national organization that helps local land trusts implement the best practices in environmental management, organizational governance, and financial responsibility.
From its beginning, the St. Lawrence Land Trust has focused its work on private property within the watersheds of the Raquette, Grasse, Oswegatchie, and St. Regis Rivers in St. Lawrence County, New York. Its first two conservation easements were recorded in 2008.
The St. Lawrence Land Trust is currently an all-volunteer organization that is sustained by the dedication and hard work of community members who care about the environmental quality, history and culture, and economic sustainability of our region. We are supported by our community through annual memberships, and financial and in-kind donations. We have also received funding and other assistance from a number of non-profit organizations that support sustainable community development and conservation. A major source of support for our activities has been the New York State Conservation Partnership Program (NYSCCP), a partnership of the Land Trust Alliance and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The NYSCCP provides New York Environmental Protection Fund money to Land Trusts that undertake conservation projects consistent with the New York State Open Space Plan.
